Before establishing the mechanical enterprise, Mr. Nguyen Tang Cuong had an impressive time when he was known as the "King of Motorcycles". When he completed his military service, he returned to start a business with a bicycle repair shop. It is known that he comes from a family with 3 generations of mechanics, his grandfather repaired guns and ammunition for Viet Minh soldiers and his parents were workers.

Recalling the moments of his youth, he excitedly said: "One day while walking on the street, I met a couple riding a Honda from Hai Phong to Thanh Hoa. When they got to Ninh Binh, the car broke down. The boy was driving a cart carrying many suitcases, while the girl was holding a bouquet of flowers. The two of them stopped by the sidewalk to get water to water the flowers so they wouldn't wilt." At this point, he laughed loudly and said: "Because she was wearing high heels, the girl unfortunately slipped in the mud and screamed loudly. Seeing that, I rushed like a squirrel to rescue her and the bouquet from getting dirty. For the first time in my life, feeling the scent of a beautiful girl made my heart skip a beat. I started running all the way back to the store and then added the words "motorcycle repair" to the sign. When the couple took the car to the shop to have it repaired, I took the engine apart, worked hard all night to repair it, took it apart and then put it back together, until the morning the car started again. When paying, the couple also gave me a bar of Camay soap. The scent of the soap bar made me very happy and excited."

Since then, Mr. Cuong has been tinkering with motorbike repair and has been passionate about the profession. He does business by "recovering" old and worn out motorbikes and selling them to customers. Furthermore, he also improved from a 3-speed car to a 4-speed car, from an automatic clutch to a clutch clutch, and successfully manufactured "bull heads" and cylinders. He also proudly said: "Back then, no one could make cylinders, so all the products I made were sold out."

With the efforts of his youth, Mr. Cuong's name is known as the "King of Motorcycles". His products at that time were popular with many people and few competitors could compare.

Bridge King

Nguyen Tang Cuong's life turned to a new page when in 1992, with the premise of successfully trading motorbikes, he founded Quang Trung Mechanical Enterprise. Here, he and his team of staff and engineers successfully produced hundreds of grades of wear-resistant steel, heat-resistant steel, acid-resistant steel, and alloy steel. At first, he encountered many difficulties when offering products because people had formed the belief that these products could only be made by foreigners.

However, Mr. Cuong still persisted in finding ways for his products to reach customers. At first, he sold the factory's products on credit to industrial plants. If they found good use, he had to pay. As expected, Mr. Cuong's products made from cheap scrap iron and steel are superior to foreign products and have received the trust of many factories. Through many years of tireless efforts, Co Khi Quang Trung was awarded the title of Hero of Labor by the Party and State in 2006, and Mr. Nguyen Tang Cuong was honored to receive the title of Hero of Labor in the Reformation Period.

Also during the time he started his career, he also had time to collect scrap metal. During the war, many bridges and culverts were destroyed and sunk into the river by mines and bombs. The People's Committee of Ninh Binh province has directed the Youth Union to cut and collect iron and steel to liberate the river bed. The young men used oxygen gas to cut the floating part of the bridge, but the iron and steel part sunk deep in the mud was impossible to salvage. Mr. Cuong recalled fondly: "At that time, I rented two barges, had the decks sealed and sunk into the water. Then hire a diver to take a cable and tie it to the bridge and then pump the water out so the barge can lift the bridge. With this method, I successfully salvaged all three bridges."

Yet, about 6 months after successfully salvaging the bridge, suddenly police officers came to make a report and he was informed that he was likely to be prosecuted for the act of "Destroying socialist property". Immediately afterwards, the Ministry of Public Security asked the Ministry of Transport for advice on Mr. Nguyen Tang Cuong's case.

At that time, Mr. Bui Danh Luu, Minister of Transport, directed to issue a certificate of merit rather than condemn Mr. Cuong. Mr. Luu added that thanks to Mr. Cuong, the bridge has relieved waterway traffic congestion while the Ministry of Transport is still struggling to find a solution. Thanks to this event, Mr. Nguyen Tang Cuong became known as the "King of Bridges".

In addition, the Ministry of Transport also assigned him to build dozens of bridges to solve traffic congestion in two major cities, Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The engineering team of Quang Trung Enterprise also manufactures suspension bridges with a lifespan of over 25 years to promote traffic and social life in remote areas. With the achievements, on November 14, 2015, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc awarded the Prime Minister's Certificate of Merit to him personally. Review in the 90s, when Vietnam's economic landscape was changing, special industrial steel products had to be imported at very high prices from outside, all metallurgical factories and universities had not yet been institutionalized creation success in this field. Once again, he showed himself when he stepped into a challenge that no one had ever done. Mr. Cuong is determined to successfully manufacture more than 100 types of special steel. In an interview, Mr. Nguyen Tang Cuong once said: "For Vietnam's machine manufacturing industry to develop, I think there are 6 areas we need to invest in: First is design, The second is mold making, the third is casting, the fourth is cutting, the fifth is heat treatment, and the sixth is assembly.

With a mindset that is ahead of its time, Quang Trung Group under the leadership of Mr. Cuong has mastered and produced many products with high precision. A typical example is the base crane turntable gear initiative. At that time, many scientists and businesses did not trust Quang Trung because they thought that casting lines and cutting machines of several hundred million dollars imported from abroad could do the job. Yet Quang Trung mechanics has divided the movement into independent columns and made batteries for large gears. This initiative has helped Quang Trung dominate the market, repelling foreign goods.

Thanks to synchronous steel casting and refining lines, Quang Trung manufactures hundreds of tons of products a day, from successfully casting heat-resistant high-grade steel for cement kilns, acid-resistant steel for Super Phosphate Lam Thao to allowing many products to be born with the most stringent requirements. Casting technology has contributed significantly to other fields of Quang Trung, helping Quang Trung to manufacture products and equipment that Vietnam has never had before.

King of cranes

In addition to the above nicknames, Mr. Cuong is best known as "King of cranes". With experience and knowledge accumulated over many years, he stepped into a completely new field - manufacturing bridge cranes, gantry cranes, and cranes. This commitment of the bicycle repairman makes people wonder what he will be able to do because this field requires a high level of technology and a huge investment.

When asked about the work in the early stages, he confided: "At that time, I purchased old Russian crane parts such as gear reducers, then improved them to suit the conditions and level of use at the country. Vietnam. It took a few years for me and the Enterprise's engineering team to complete the first crane, with a gearbox weighing only 1 ton, not 10 tons like Russia's. Therefore, the cost of cranes is much cheaper than imported ones."

With unremitting efforts, Quang Trung Mechanical Enterprise is now known as Quang Trung Industrial Group, always leading in the technology of manufacturing super long and super heavy cranes "made in Vietnam", specializing in providing for shipbuilding, hydropower, oil and gas industries,... with prices only 70% of imported prices.
